Anglican School Food Programme

Over 20 schools are working with Faiths4Change to grow food in school grounds, involving church members and local people. Schools were invited to apply to be part of this pilot programme and we were delighted with the responce. Primary and Secondary schools from across the Diocese of Liverpool are taking part. Each school works differently, working with Faiths4Change in differing ways depending on the needs of the school and community.

Teacher Michelle Rufus from St Cleopas CE Primary School in Toxteth attended a school gardening training course Faiths4Change organised with Walton Lea Gardens in Warrington. This enabled Michelle to give every child in the school an opoprtunity to plant up to 5 seeds, take them home to germinate and thenm bring them back to plant in the school allotments during environment week in June. Prior to the seed planting day, the vicar of St Cleopas held an assembly in the school focusing on God’s creation and taught some action songs to get the children ready for gardenning! The mammoth seed planting happened with the help of Helen from Faiths4Change, Wendy Murray from Liverpool City Council Environmental Services and Clem Pettitt from Norris Green Fingers.

Bishop Martin School in Woolton attended an environmnet day “Feed Your Head” organised by Liverpool Anglican Cathedral Education Team. They have also signed up to grow food with the Diocese and as part of the day at the cathedral they learnt about growing food in African Bag gardens, a design of garden which helps children orphaned by AIDS or conflict in many African countries. They each planted a seed to take back to school to plant in their African bag garden.
