Smoke Free Environment

East Lancs PCT Stop Smoking Services are now delivering a special programme in schools to help them be more aware of how smoking is harmful to their health and also encouraging them to pass this message onto family and friends.

As part of the programme Faiths4Change launched a banner competition in Walverden County primary School asking the children to design a banner discouraging people smoking around the school gates; or directly outside the school. Walverden is the first school in Pendle to participate in the banner competition. The purpose of the banner is to reinforce the most recent government’s messages via television and radio such as:

• Children are 3 times more likely to smoke if their parents do
• Children copy their parent’s behaviour
• Don’t keep smoking in the family.

The competition winner Shamsa Kanwal had her winning picture and her name and photograph printed onto a banner and 2 copies of the banner have been produced and are placed on the gates outside the school for all the community to see. Partners involved in the whole project were EastLancs PCT, Neighbourhood health workers, SCAF, Police, Fire and rescue services, sow and grow project, smoke free homes.
